Having a smoke detector is a requirement, having an ugly one is not. This is an exercise to elevate an everyday object into a piece of art. Why? So we can care about it enough to maintain it, and it can actually work at the time that it should.

Prototyping was essential in this exercise. Every model was put up on the wall and then looked at with a group of people to pick out the best ideas.
